Soenksen’s research focuses on Japanese art history, particularly textiles. 
Soenksen earned a bachelor's degree in psychology at the University of Mary Washington and a master's degree in art history at Tufts University, and has worked at the Ringling Museum, the Clark Center for Japanese Art and Culture, the Fralin Museum of Art, and the Frist Art Museum.
