Social Media Tips for Students: Ryerson University Experts

Ryerson University’s social media and technology experts came up with some advice for college students to use social media and the web as a personal, professional, and academic resource. These 10 tips will help students and professionals use social media effectively and avoid some common pitfalls. (tips edited and condensed by your Newswise blog editor)
1. Learn with the Internet, but don’t believe it. Stop and reflect on where you got your information and how valid it is.
2. Use social media to share, document, and organize your interests and experiences.
3. Keep social networks separate from professional networks.
4. Know the difference between collaboration and cheating.
5. Don’t let social networking replace face-to-face contact.
6. Everything you do on the Internet is available to employers, parents and future partners.
7. There is no anonymity on the Internet. If you post it, someone will find it.
8. Use discretion before accepting new `friends’ - do you know who that person really is? When meeting online friends for the first time, do it in public with your real life friends.
9. “Public” information is anything that can be shared with the world. Only share “personal” information with friends. “Private” information should not be online. Control your personal information by restricting access to your social media profiles, and controlling who you connect with as “friends” online.
10. Never press ‘send’ when tired or emotional. Like a conversation, those words can’t be taken back once uttered. Unlike a conversation, those words are preserved forever in writing.
