Reston, VA, November 19, 2020--The Academy of Eating Disorders Announces its Upcoming Conference, to be Held Virtually in June 2021
From June 15 – 17, 2021, the annual International Conference on Eating Disorders (ICED) will connect providers, researchers, advocates, students, and experts by experience worldwide in their commitment to eating disorders education, treatment, research, and prevention. Hosted by the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED), ICED 2021 will center around the theme “Cultivating Inclusivity and Diversity Across Research and Practice” and will be co-chaired by Jason Lavender, PhD, FAED and Emilio Compte, PhD. Following the vast success of the first virtual ICED in 2020, which had record-breaking attendance from participants across 63 countries around the globe, ICED 2021 will again be a robust virtual event, with both live and on-demand access.
Dr. Anne Becker, the Maude and Lillian Presley Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA, will commence ICED 2021 with a keynote address focusing on the global mental health and social and cultural factors, especially within diverse populations, with regard to identifying, researching and treating eating disorders. .
Four plenaries are also planned for ICED 2021, each highlighting innovative topics in the field of eating disorders, with expert speakers and interactive opportunities for audience participation. The Biology Plenary will include a panel of experts from Italy, Germany, Canada, and the USA, who will each present cutting-edge research about the biological effects on pathological eating. “Hidden in Plain Sight: Eating Disorders in Underrepresented Populations,” the slated Sociocultural Plenary, will underscore the crucial need for improved recognition and treatment of eating disorders among underrepresented populations, including individuals who identify as sexual and/or gender minorities, individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities, and those with higher body sizes/weights.
The Treatment Plenary will explore factors that influence the application of evidence-based treatments for eating disorders. Finally, the much anticipated Wildcard Plenary, “Consequences of the COVID-19 Global Pandemic: What Have We Learned and Where Do We Go from Here?” will provide timely and crucial insights about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on individuals with EDs and treatment considerations in light of the pandemic.
Additional conference highlights include Clinical Teaching and Research Training Days, paper and poster presentations, Special Interest Group (SIG) discussion panels, and clinical workshops. Numerous interactive activities will foster virtual networking opportunities for all attendees, including a Global luncheon, a Mentor/Mentee program, an opportunity to Meet the Experts one-on-one, and a Research-Practice Global Think Tank where presenters will discuss the Impact of Funding and Payment on Research and Practice in Eating Disorders.
