Newswise — Since the advent of the No Child Left Behind Act, social studies have been de-emphasized in many states, including Maryland, where the subject has been cut altogether in some especially impoverished schools.
The Maryland State Department of Education dropped its assessment test in government as a requirement for high school graduation last year. Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, however, has reversed that decision, signing into a law a bill to return the mandatory test in 2017.
Dr. Joel Jenne, who teaches social studies education in Salisbury University’s Education Specialties Department, is available to discuss the importance of social studies in school systems. Jenne has presented at annual conferences hosted by the National Council for the Social Studies and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
