Newswise — Baltimore, Md. – Leon Reinstein, M.D., associate physiatrist-in-chief of Sinai Rehabilitation Center, has been given the Frank H. Krusen, M.D., Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R). He was chosen for the academy’s highest honor based on his outstanding and unique contributions to the specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation in the areas of patient care, research, education and administration.

“We are gratified that Dr. Reinstein has been selected as this year’s recipient of the academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award,” said Scott Brown, M.D., chief of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Sinai Hospital. “He helped define the modern concept of ‘inpatient rehabilitation,’ and he continues to be a respected leader in his field. I have always looked to Dr. Reinstein as a role model, and I congratulate him on this well-deserved honor.”

Reinstein has been a respected figure in the physical medicine and rehabilitation community for the past 40 years. He joined Sinai Hospital in 1985. Through his expertise, the hospital established a reputation as one of the mid-Atlantic’s leading comprehensive rehabilitation centers. Among Reinstein’s most significant accomplishments was the leading role he played in the opening of the Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit in 1985. This 23-bed unit was recently joined by its sister unit, the 20-bed Louis and Phyllis Friedman Neurological Rehabilitation Center.

Reinstein has authored 34 publications and has given 300 national presentations throughout his career. He holds a clinical professorship at Virginia Commonwealth University.

He received the award during the AAPM&R’s annual assembly at National Harbor, Md., on October 5. The Frank H. Krusen, M.D., Lifetime Achievement Award is named after the academy’s fourth president, and Krusen was the award’s first recipient in 1972. The AAPM&R is the national medical society for more than 8,000 physicians specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation.
