Joseph A. Barone, dean of the at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, was recognized this month with the for 2024 by the New Jersey Pharmacists Association in partnership with the American Pharmacists Association Foundation.

The associations honored for his contributions to building a strong, healthy community.

Barone was recognized for his overall contributions to the profession, specifically the creation of the , the largest of its kind in the country that is designed to provide training at pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical companies. He was also honored for his commitment to interprofessional education, the creation of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program and support of faculty-developed programs and initiatives that improve the health of the state.

“Dean Barone’s leadership has strengthened pharmacy education nationally and at Rutgers and expanded the role of pharmacists in patient care,” said Brian Strom, chancellor of Rutgers Health. “His commitment to service goes beyond the university, shaping policies and programs that directly benefit New Jersey communities and the nation. This award rightly honors his dedication to advancing both the profession and public health.”

First awarded in 1958, the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership and community service. In addition to service through their regional and national pharmacy associations, award recipients are recognized for devoting time, expertise and support to a variety of causes and community outreach efforts. The award is recognized as an international symbol of the pharmacy profession and one of the field’s  most distinguished honors.
