Newswise — In today’s digital world where AI and online distractions are ever-present, literacy remains an essential yet often overlooked skill for success. Read Across America Day, celebrated March 2 and coinciding with Dr. Seuss’ birthday, aims to foster a love of reading.
, a JMU associate professor and literacy education expert, says reading goes beyond just decoding words—it's about understanding, interpreting and analyzing information.
Introducing reading as an enjoyable part of literacy from an early age significantly increases their chances of success, says Bollinger. “An easy way to encourage a lifelong love of reading is to read aloud to students without making it feel like an assignment—pausing to discuss characters, make connections, and wonder about what happens next.”
“You can’t do much without being literate,” says Bollinger. “Strong literacy skills help students succeed academically, but they also empower them in real-world situations. Without literacy, opportunities become limited, making it an essential skill for lifelong success.”
Literacy is constantly evolving, with teaching styles shifting and incorporating new perspectives. Generative AI is now a big player in both teaching and learning in schools, offering benefits but also raising concerns about authenticity, comprehension and the role of traditional texts in education.
Bollinger’s ongoing research explores how classrooms are increasingly relying on AI-generated materials instead of incorporating traditional literature.
She suggests several strategies educators can use to balance traditional and digital literacy methods:
- Use technology to complement literacy instruction—such as using audiobooks, e-readers or interactive storytelling apps alongside print books.
- Encourage students to critically evaluate digital content, identify credible sources, recognize misinformation, and analyze bias in online texts.
- Preserve book-rich environments to keep students engaged with physical books and traditional literacy practices.
