Henry C. “Hank” Foley, Ph.D., president of New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), today announced that Daniel Ferrara, (D.O. ’86), FACEP, has been appointed to NYIT’s Board of Trustees. Ferrara is the most recent alumnus to join the institution’s governing board, and the first from NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM).
Ferrara, a resident of Old Brookville, N.Y., is northeast regional president for Alteon Health, a physician-led organization that supports some of the most respected health systems in the United States. With over 1,700 clinicians serving more than 125 practice locations nationwide, Alteon is a leading provider of emergency medicine, hospitalist medicine, critical care, post-acute care, and virtual and home health services.
“An excellent physician, a superb entrepreneur, and an outstanding NYIT alumnus, Dan is an important addition to our Board of Trustees,” said Foley. “His dual focus on healing patients and running businesses gives him a unique perspective on generating successful outcomes, and we are very fortunate to have his experience contribute to our board.”
Ferrara has long been involved in giving back to his medical school. He provided guidance and financial support for the Healing Path, located on the NYITCOM campus at NYIT-Long Island, created to remind medical students to take time to reflect and focus on their own health and wellness. He also is helping to promote the restructuring and expansion of NYIT’s simulation lab. “As an alumnus, I hope to amplify the student perspective at the highest level of institutional leadership, and also to lead by example as an NYIT supporter,” he said. “Even small changes can lead to positive outcomes—whether for patients, students, or NYIT itself.”
Prior to joining Alteon in early 2017, Ferrara spent nearly 15 years with Island Medical Physicians, PC, of which he was founder and chief executive officer. Passionate about emergency medicine, Ferrara started the practice with a goal to provide the highest level of care to patients, regardless of the hospital or emergency room they had been admitted to. He has served as chairman of the department of emergency medicine at South Nassau Communities Hospital, New Island Hospital, and Massapequa General Hospital. He also served as the clinical director of emergency medicine at SUNY Stony Brook and was an emergency medicine physician at Huntington Hospital.
Ferrara completed his emergency medicine residency at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in the Bronx, and his osteopathic medicine residency at The Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn. He earned a B.S. in Biology at Allegheny College, Meadville, Penn.
