In this false color scanning electron microscopy image, a metal surface was modified to form microscopic “roses” and “thorns.” These types of metal surfaces could be applied broadly to the detection, prevention, or treatment of diseases. Fathi explored using these types of surfaces as antibacterial agents as a graduate student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).
