Don T. Robell, right, of Union College and lead author of the recently published paper in Nature, is with one of the project’s Peruvian drillers. Researchers and drilling operators worked around the clock for seven weeks in 2017 on a coring platform to collect sedimentary deposits from Lake Junin, high in the Peruvian Andes to create a record of glacial changes that stretches back nearly 1 million years.
