The Council on Undergraduate Research provides guidance for a new era of excellence in undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative inquiry.
Dr. Naomi Lee, Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Northern Arizona University, an NIH Early-Stage Investigator, an officer in the Army Reserves, and a member of the Seneca Nation, has been selected as the 2024 recipient of the Council on Undergraduate Research’s Silvia Ronco Innovative Mentor Award.
Dr. Karina Elizabeth Vázquez, Community-Based Learning Director in the Department of Latin America, Latino, & Iberian Studies at the University of Richmond, has been selected as the 2024 Council on Undergraduate Research – Arts and Humanities Faculty Mentor Awardee.
Dr. John Anderson, W.H. Drury Professor of Ecology and Natural History at College of the Atlantic (COA) in Bar Harbor, ME, has been selected as the 2024 Council on Undergraduate Research – Goldwater Scholars Faculty Mentor Awardee.
Dr. Karen K. Resendes, Associate Dean of Assessment and the First Year Experience, Professor of Biology at Westminster College (New Wilmington, PA), has been elected to serve as the Council on Undergraduate Research Board of Directors’ Treasurer for the membership year 2024-2025.
Dr. James T. LaPlant, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences for Valdosta State University (Valdosta, GA), has been elected to serve as president of the Council on Undergraduate Research for the membership year 2025-2026.
CUR congratulates its 2023 Campus-Wide Award for Undergraduate Research Accomplishments (AURA) awardees College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University (CSBSJU) (St. Joseph, MN), University of Florida (UF) (Gainesville, FL), and Worchester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) (Worcester, MA). This award recognizes institutions with exemplary programs that provide high-quality research experiences for undergraduates. A celebration of these awardees will take place on June 11, virtually.
The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) has selected the city of Pittsburgh to hold the 2025 National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in partnership with Duquesne University and the Pittsburgh Council on Higher Education.
The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) congratulates the following 41 teams accepted to be a part of the 2023-24 Scholars Transforming Through Research (STR) Program. The STR Program is a competitive application-based professional development opportunity for teams consisting of a campus representative and one to three undergraduate students.

These positions assist in providing the strategic direction of CUR, while supporting CUR's mission and strategic goals.
John F. Barthell, Ph.D. (University of Central Oklahoma/National Science Foundation), Lance Barton, Ph.D. (Austin College/University of North Carolina at Charlotte), and Winny Dong, Ph.D. (California State Polytechnic University at Pomona) have been elected to serve as council representatives on CUR's Executive Board. These positions assist in providing the strategic direction of CUR and represent the voice of its members while supporting CUR's mission and strategic goals.
Dr. Maria Iacullo-Bird, Assistant Provost for Research in the Office of Research and Clinical Associate Professor of History at the Dyson College of Arts and Sciences at Pace University, has been elected to serve as president of the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR). Iacullo-Bird will become president-elect on July 1, 2023, taking a seat on CUR's Executive Board, and succeeding 2023-2024 CUR president Bethany Usher (George Mason University) in the summer of 2024.
Amid the current cultural narrative diminishing the value of higher education, a prolonged pandemic that has exacerbated inequities in so many ways, an increasing focus on workforce development, legislative mandates, and changing student populations, the importance of bridging the impact of undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative inquiry (URSCI) experiences to career readiness skills is a critical next step for the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) as leaders in undergraduate research.
The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) congratulates its 2022 Campus-Wide Award for Undergraduate Research Accomplishments (AURA) recipient Norwich University (Northfield, VT). This award recognizes institutions with exemplary programs that provide high-quality research experiences for undergraduates. Now in its eighth year, the AURA award draws on CUR's "Characteristics of Excellence in Undergraduate Research", which outlines criteria for exceptional undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activity programs.
On September 13, 2022, the Council on Undergraduate Research’s (CUR) Executive Board moved to approve the submitted name rephrasing to the formerly known Mathematics and Computer Sciences Division effective immediately. The approval comes with a Divisional name change: the Mathematical, Computing, and Statistical Sciences Division (MCS).

Dr. Louise Charkoudian, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Haverford College in Pennsylvania, has been selected as the first recipient for the Council on Undergraduate Research’s (CUR) Silvia Ronco Innovative Mentor Award.
