Broward College has led the Florida College System for the third consecutive year for the number of industry certifications reported. Students and recent graduates of the College earned 1,278 certifications or licenses in the areas of healthcare, information technology, manufacturing and transportation. Hillsborough Community College was second with 735 industry certifications awarded.

Today, the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program named Broward College as one of the nation’s top 150 community colleges eligible to compete for the 2017 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence and $1 million dollars in prize funds, as well as Siemens Technical Scholars Program student scholarships. According to a recent study, “Labor Market Experiences After Postsecondary Education,” Broward College graduates not only meet the demands of the job market, but also make more money their first year of employment, than those completing the same degrees at other schools. The report, a product of the partnership between the State of Florida and College Measures, documents the variations in median first-year wages of graduates from two-year and four-year higher education institutions.

Broward College is expanding its current $10,000 ($10K) baccalaureate degree offerings to include six additional options, totaling 11 qualifying bachelor’s degree programs. As a part of the $10K initiative, eligible students pay the first $10,000 of tuition and fees, and the College pays the remainder of the student’s tuition and fees during the last year of study.
Broward College was recently recognized as a top college in the nation for the high number of associate degrees it awards in an academic year. During 2013-14, Broward College conferred 5,780 associate degrees, ranking the college fifth in the nation, according to the Top 100 Associate Degree Producers for 2015 report, which is issued by Community College Week.
During the month of September and as the school year begins, many healthcare, family and children’s organizations focus on the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). As part of this, Alexis Resnick, Ph.D., a professor of psychology in the behavioral science department at Broward College, as well as a licensed psychologist who provides assessment, therapy and consultation services to children, adolescents and young adults with behavioral, academic, developmental, emotional, and social concerns, is providing several behavioral treatment tips for ADHD.

Effective with the start of the Fall 2015 semester on Monday, August 24, Broward College will be a tobacco-free and smoke-free campus. The Broward College Board of Trustees recently approved the policy to further promote a safe and healthy environment for faculty, staff, students and the community.
Nearly 5 million people in the U.S. are living with heart failure. To assure that South Florida cardiovascular disease patients receive care from knowledgeable and skilled nurses, Broward College’s Continuing Education and Workforce Development program is offering a new Advanced Heart Failure course. This class is now included amongst a wide variety of specialty nursing offerings, such as Emergency Nursing and Critical Care Nursing courses, which were created through the Broward Specialty Nursing Consortium, a unique partnership, unlike anywhere in the United States, between the College and a group of medical professionals – consisting of the North Broward and South Broward hospital districts, in conjunction with Holy Cross Hospital and the Cleveland Clinic – to meet the immediate needs of the constantly changing South Florida health care environment.

As a part of the new Supply Chain Management Express degree program, Broward College is offering flexible and accelerated weekend options at its Miramar West Center. Designed for busy working adults interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Applied Science in Supply Chain Management degree, this program will allow students to complete their degree in just over two years. Applications are currently being accepted.
Broward College Online, the College’s virtual campus which offers some of the most affordable degrees in South Florida, is introducing two new associate degree programs in computer and network security – cybersecurity, and technology project management, to expand opportunities for students to enter these high-wage, growing fields of employment. These programs were developed using labor market analysis, which measures and determines local workforce demand.
This summer, Broward College students are among the first to participate in Workday@College, a new initiative that trains students enrolled at higher education institutions with the leading-edge skills and real-world experience required to join the next generation of consultants that will support Workday customers.
