The Health Care Cost Institute's new study shows insulin costs nearly doubled from 2012 to 2016.
In 2016, patients with Type I diabetes paid, on average, $5,705 for insulin in the U.S., up from $2,864 spent in 2012.

Regarding the Health Care Cost Institute's report, Dr. Miller says:
- Access to affordable insulin remains a public health crisis for people living with all types of diabetes.
- Without insulin, patients with Type 1 diabetes can die. Having to choose between paying for insulin or making a car or mortgage payment is a common occurrence for many of our patients with diabetes.
- Congress needs to act to improve access to this life-sustaining medicine for millions of Americans living with diabetes.
