Students in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s College of Journalism and Mass Communications won three first place honors and four awards of excellence in the Broadcast Education Association’s Festival of Media Arts in February.
Theodore Ball, a junior journalism, and sports media and communication major from Alvo, Nebraska, won first place in the radio hard news reporting category for “Nebraska's Prison Overcrowding.” Arden Louchheim, a sophomore sports media and communication major from Park City, Utah, tied for first place in the audio sports story/feature/news category for “Japan's Takahashi finds golf home at Nebraska.”

Macy Byars, a senior journalism and broadcasting major from Omaha, won an award of excellence in the PSA/commercial category for “Play LCM (Lincoln Children’s Museum).” Blake Mace, a junior sports media and communication, and broadcasting major from Council Bluffs, Iowa, won an award of excellence in the radio feature category for “Severe WX Jumps in Midwest.” Ellen Pham, a sophomore broadcasting major from La Vista, and Mikee Naegele, a junior film studies major from Papillion, won an award of excellence in the radio hard news reporting category for “Women's Gymnastics Transfers.”

The BEA Festival of Media Arts is an international media competition focused on student and faculty creative endeavors. In the last six years, more than 8,000 creative works have been submitted by BEA’s 300-plus member institutions around the globe. This year, BEA received 2,285 entries and awarded 445 student winners from 111 colleges and universities.
