Newswise — Tampa, FL – Erica Bisson, MD, MPH, has been named Chair of the AANS/CNS Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves (DSPN), marking a new chapter in the section’s mission to advance spine and peripheral nerve care through research, education and advocacy. 

“I am honored to serve as Chair of the DSPN Section,” said Dr. Bisson. “Collaboration across neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery and related specialties is essential to driving innovation and improving the quality and safety of spine and peripheral nerve care. By strengthening our commitment to evidence-based practice, research and education, we can ensure the highest standard of care for our patients. I look forward to working with my colleagues to continue fostering excellence in our field.” 

Dr. Bisson is Professor of Neurosurgery and Adjunct Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Utah, where she also serves as Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs and Executive Medical Officer for the faculty practice. She earned her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine, completed her neurosurgical residency at the University of Vermont, and pursued a fellowship in complex spinal disorders at the University of Utah under Dr. Ronald Apfelbaum. 

She previously held academic and clinical leadership roles at Lahey Clinic and Tufts University School of Medicine before returning to Utah, where she served as Director of the CAST-approved Neurosurgical Spine Fellowship and Vice Chair for Diversity and Inclusion. 

A Fellow of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons, Dr. Bisson has authored over 130 peer-reviewed publications and is a principal investigator on several national and international multicenter trials.  

Nationally, Dr. Bisson served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Neurosurgery and as Scientific Program Chair for the AANS/CNS Joint Section on Spine and Peripheral Nerves.
