Newswise — The American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA Pain Medicine) 2025 will be awarded to Mohammed M. A. Hakim, MD, a chronic pain fellow at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH.
Dr. Hakim earned his medical degree from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences in Bangalore, India, before completing his residency in anesthesiology at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, OH.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hakim has been recognized for his unwavering commitment to education and leadership by numerous professional organizations and committees, as well as mentors and colleagues within his institutions.
“Locally, he stands out with his active involvement in teaching residents and students about pain medicine, sparking their interest in the field and guiding them toward future careers in the specialty,” Cleveland Clinic Pain Fellowship Program Director Sherif Costandi, MD, shares.
Dr. Hakim served as the president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Resident/Fellow Section for the 2023-2024 academic year, where he contributed to the advancement of resident education, advocacy, and professional development. He was also recognized as an ASA Resident Scholar in 2023, gaining firsthand experience in legislative processes and health care policy in Washington, DC.
He plays a pivotal role in ASRA Pain Medicine by co-chairing the Resident & Fellow Committee Career Development and Networking subcommittee, facilitating networking opportunities between fellows and program directors, and enhancing resident engagement within the specialty.
Dr. Hakim has presented at national and international conferences and authored 32 peer-reviewed publications. His work includes investigating the implementation of telemedicine in preoperative settings to improve patient care, as well as initiatives aimed at increasing diversity and leadership opportunities within the field.
Dr. Costandi adds, “He has consistently prioritized teamwork by collaborating with peers, faculty, and professional organizations to create opportunities for growth and learning.”
Dr. Hakim is a founding member of the Helping Out People Everywhere (HOPE) Foundation, a registered non-profit organization providing medical aid. Being fluent in seven languages enables him to improve patient care, and at the same time, widen global research collaborations.

The Resident/Fellow of the Year Award is given annually to a resident or fellow member of ASRA Pain Medicine who has demonstrated significant contributions to ASRA Pain Medicine events or activities related to regional anesthesia or pain medicine, has contributed to the welfare of residents, or quality of residency education, serves as a role model and mentor, and embodies the values of ASRA Pain Medicine.
