Paul Ashwood, Ph.D.Professor, Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, School of Medicine,UC Davis MIND Institute
Dr. Ashwood’s research program is at the forefront of characterizing the role the immune system may play in some subjects with autism. He was the first to demonstrate links between immune dysfunction and the severity of impairments that are hallmark features of autism such as social interactions and communication. His work has highlighted the importance of innate immune pathways, gut-brain connections and the presence of autoimmunity in some children with autism. Dr. Ashwood’s original research was among the first to characterize gastrointestinal pathology observed in some cases of children with autism.
