Newswise — Paxton, MA (November 10, 2011) Anyone who has ever struggled with poverty knows how extremely expensive it is to be poor. This quote from the African American playwright and novelist, James Baldwin, was recently used by Dr. Jack P. Calareso, President of Anna Maria College, Paxton, MA when discussing the cost of higher education and students of low economic means. Referencing research that identified that 80% of the U.S.’s low income students are forced to enroll in the least selective colleges and universities, Dr. Calareso forces educational leaders, government and elected officials and others to face the facts that poorer students have limited access to more selective institutions. He points out that eloquent speeches and related hype won’t break the cycle of poverty that Baldwin speaks so frankly about; instead, Dr. Calareso proclaims that education can break the poverty cycle and all students, no matter economic status, should have access to the best education possible.

Dr. Calareso is an advocate for promoting the common good and speaks nationally and internationally on issues surrounding higher education, ethics, civic engagement, and social justice. He is the author of numerous articles and books and his byline has appeared frequently on the editorial pages of numerous newspapers. He is also the author of a weekly blog, Eye on Higher Education, where he regularly addresses issues related to higher education and the world.

Dr. Calareso is a graduate of Boston College and he received his Master of Arts in Theology and Scripture from St. Bernard’s School of Theology and his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Administration from Marquette University. The Anna Maria College presidency is his third, having served most recently as the president of Ohio Dominican University in Columbus and previously at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa. With a career in higher education that spans more than two decades, Dr. Calareso has served as the chief academic officer at Merrimack College in North Andover and the College of Saint Rose in Albany, N.Y. He also has had a distinguished career as a professor of theology and educational leadership, and as a school superintendent, principal and teacher.
