Newswise — The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) has selected two Junior Traveling Fellows for the 2020 trip to New Zealand with Senior Fellow Margot Putukian, MD, FAMSSM, who is a Past President of AMSSM and the AMSSM Foundation.
Christina Master, MD and Siobhan Statuta, MD will join Dr. Putukian on the trip that will include stops and presentations throughout New Zealand.
“I am thrilled and very honored to have the opportunity to share this upcoming experience with Siobhan and Tina,” Dr. Putukian said. “I couldn’t think of a better representation of our AMSSM membership, and I look forward to learning from them during our travels.”
Dr. Master, MD is a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and is a pediatric and adolescent primary care sports medicine specialist, certified in brain injury medicine, as well as an academic general pediatrician, at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Her research and clinical interests are in the area of pediatric and adolescent concussion. She has written and lectured extensively about concussions in children and adolescents and helped develop the Minds Matter Concussion Program at CHOP.
“I am so honored and excited to be representing AMSSM, especially with such an outstanding group of women,” Dr. Master said.
Dr. Statuta is an Assistant Professor in the Family Medicine Department at the University of Virginia. Her practice focuses mainly on sports medicine split between providing primary care to UVA athletes and community athletes at UVA’s The Runner’s Clinic. In addition, she serves as the Director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship and teaches residents and medical students on a daily basis.
“This has been a dream of mine and I cannot actually believe that it’s true,” Dr. Statuta said. “This trip will certainly be fantastic and I am so very humbled to have been selected. I look forward to representing the AMSSM, fully absorbing this experience, and enjoying the life-long friendships that ensue.”
As previously announced, Mark Fulcher, MBChB, MMedSci will serve as the 2020 International Visiting Fellow and hosting the group in New Zealand. Dr. Fulcher is based out of Auckland, NZ and is the Incoming President of ACSEP, as well as the Medical Director of New Zealand Football and is a member of the FIFA Medical Committee.
The purpose of the AMSSM Traveling Fellowship program is to encourage academic interchange, share research and explore common clinical interests among sports medicine leaders. The experience will include the opportunity to view live patient encounters, tour sports medicine facilities, share cases and spend time with regional experts in sports medicine.
The Traveling Fellowship Program is funded from an educational grant provided to the AMSSM Foundation from DJO Global.
