Newswise — ROSEMONT, Ill. (December 12, 2024)—The American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR) announced a significant milestone in support of advancing the use of real-world data to improve orthopaedic care. After a thorough and rigorous assessment, the (ODEP) has approved use of AJRR data to support manufacturer applications for 3- and 5-year ODEP benchmarks for Total Hip Replacements, Total Knee Replacements and Uni-condylar Knee Replacements. An independent panel of clinical and non-clinical experts with experience of the orthopaedic industry, the ODEP provides objective, systematic ratings of the strength of evidence supporting the performance of an orthopaedic implant.
According to James I. Huddleston, III, MD, FAAOS, chair of the AJRR Steering Committee: "The acceptance of AJRR data within the ODEP framework represents a pivotal moment for the musculoskeletal field. By combining real-world insights and patient outcomes with device performance from the U.S., we're advancing patient safety and supporting medical device innovation with a world-wide impact using evidence-based, quality data. The benefits hold promise for both the medical device industry as well as orthopaedic surgeons internationally. We hope this collaboration empowers manufacturers and helps accelerate benchmark evaluations to ultimately improve the value of care for patients undergoing total hip and knee replacements."
Key highlights include:
- Acceptance of AJRR data within ODEP framework for 3- and 5-year ratings.
- Data-Driven Product Development: AJRR’s rich data set provides manufacturers with deep insights into surgical outcomes, allowing for the refinement of product designs and the enhancement of device performance.
- Enhanced Regulatory Compliance: The integration with ODEP’s stringent standards and AJRR’s real-world data streamlines regulatory processes, facilitating quicker product approvals and market entry.
- Expanded ability to evaluate real-world clinical outcomes to make informed decisions about implants and surgical techniques.
