A new study, The prevalence, incidence, and sociodemographic risk factors of HIV among older adults in sub-Saharan Africa (AWI-Gen): a multicentre, longitudinal cohort study, reveals that HIV in older adults is still noteworthy.
Experts to speak on this:
Dr Luicer Olubayo is a post-doc fellow at the Sydney Brenner Institute of Molecular Bioscience at Wits University.
Originally from Kenya, she was part of the South African Next Generation Sequencing Group which identified the SARS-Cov-2 Omicron variant. Now, In collaboration with scientists from Stanford University, she is part of the AWI-Gen 2 Microbiome Project, which seeks to understand how genetics, geography, and lifestyle shape the microbiome and influence our health in an understudied African population.
She has expertise in genomic research in HIV.
Professor Xavier Gomez:
Xavier is the research director at the Wits University's rural research unit, Agincourt.
He led the study on HIV.
Here is a brief snippet of what he does and a link to his professional bio:
"My areas of interest are chronic diseases (including communicable (HIV/TB) and non-communicable diseases). In this area of work, I am interested in the epidemiology of the double epidemic of HIV and NCD. New, cutting edge areas of study that I am leading include the study of multimorbidity in older population; sleep conditions of older population in rural Africa and its impact in non-communicable diseases; and the integration of chronic care in the primary health care system including the development and strengthening of information systems."
