It is a major risk factor for cirrhosis and liver cancer. And because treatment options are limited, MASH is the second leading cause for liver transplants in the United States after cirrhosis caused by chronic hepatitis C infection. A better understanding of the pathological processes that drive MASH is critical to creating effective treatments. In a new paper published August 19, 2024 in PNAS, a team of scientists from Sanford Burnham Prebys, the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and elsewhere, describe the complex interplay between diseased liver cells and macrophages -- a type of white blood cell whose jobs include killing and removing harmful cells and pathogens and helping to spur normal healing. /articles//images/uploads/2024/08/22/66c7861fd0c46_kupffercell-nigms.jpg,/images/uploads/2024/08/22/66c7868f3aa77_davidbrenner.jpg,/images/uploads/2024/08/22/66c786af22f68_debanjandhar.jpg Sanford Burnham Prebys Adults with chronic liver disease face more healthcare barriers than those with other diseases /articles/adults-with-chronic-liver-disease-face-more-healthcare-barriers-than-those-with-other-diseases/?sc=c6487 /articles/adults-with-chronic-liver-disease-face-more-healthcare-barriers-than-those-with-other-diseases/?sc=c6487 Wed, 21 Aug 2024 19:05:03 EST Aging,All Journal News,Cardiovascular Health,Health Disparities,Healthcare,Liver Disease Medical News Research Alert University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Health Sciences MD Anderson Research Highlights for August 21, 2024 /articles/md-anderson-research-highlights-for-august-21-2024/?sc=c6487 /articles/md-anderson-research-highlights-for-august-21-2024/?sc=c6487 Wed, 21 Aug 2024 12:00:44 EST All Journal News,Cancer,Cell Biology,Digestive Disorders,Liver Disease,Respiratory Diseases and Disorders,Nature (journal),Biotech,Top Hit Stories,Top Clipped Stories Medical News,Science News Research Results The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center's Research Highlights showcases the latest breakthroughs in cancer care, research and prevention.
