Ultra-fast imaging technique captures mouse placenta. This image of a developing mouse placenta was taken during embryonic day 12. Bluer areas have lower levels of blood oxygenation while redder areas have higher levels.

Mouse placenta responds to alcohol. After exposure to alcohol, the blood oxygenation level in the mouse placenta is rapidly increased, as indicated in the increase in red color in the vasculature on the right.
